My Philosophy
Whatever I do, I do it in the hope of touching the heart or sparking the imagination of the viewer. If I can bring a smile to a child’s face through a picture book… or help calm someone’s busy day with the soothing effect of a watercolor landscape or still life, I have done my job! I do it because I truly believe that the visual arts have the power to inspire.
I am thankful every day that I am so involved in illustration as a profession because it helps to foster literacy and, if done well, it makes the world a more beautiful place.
About Me
My fascination with children’s books developed when I was quite young. The inspiration for this interest was my Great Aunt Opal Wheeler, a prolific writer of mid-century children’s books. Aunt Opal would gift us with the full children’s book list from her
publisher, Dutton Books, each
Christmas.
That was it, I was hooked. After
graduating from Elmira College
and some time at the Dial Press
and Simon & Schuster, I established my own
freelance illustration business. That was more than 75 illustrated books ago. Along the way, I took advantage of some great opportunities and worked on a variety of projects for many clients in wonderfully diverse markets.
Keeping in touch with the City Mouse/Country Mouse lifestyle I love, I currently divide my time between my home studios in Manhattan and Ballston Spa, New York State’s first Free Trade town.
